Sugar & Sweeteners

The short answer

Sugar isn't the enemy — hidden, added sugar is. Enjoy whole-food sweetness, learn to spot the added stuff on labels, and keep the rest for a treat.

Natural vs added

The sugar in whole fruit comes wrapped in fiber and water, which is why it doesn't hit you the same way. The trouble is added sugar — the barrels of it hidden in processed foods and sweetened drinks.

Spot it on the label

Added sugar hides under dozens of names (syrups, anything ending in ‘-ose,’ cane juice). Check the ‘added sugars’ line, and be suspicious when foods that shouldn't be sweet are — sauces, dressings, breads.

Why it's worth minding

Too much added sugar means energy spikes and crashes, more cravings, and that 3 o'clock slump. Whole-food carbohydrates give you steadier energy through the day.

Sweeten with real food

When you want something sweet, reach for fruit, a little raw honey or maple, a medjool date. Real sweetness, in a form your body actually knows what to do with.

Gina's tip

You don't have to swear off sweetness — just move it back to real food. Fruit, a little honey, a square of dark chocolate. The cravings quiet down faster than you'd think.
