Mindful Shifts*

The short answer

The mind-body connection is powerful. Just as our bodies hold onto physical waste, our minds hold emotional baggage — and a few mindful shifts can help us clear it and make room for joy.

The mind-body connection is undeniably powerful. When we talk about “getting the crap out” of our system, it goes beyond the intestines and toilets. Most of us are carrying emotional baggage in our minds as well.

Just as stubborn waste can leave us feeling bloated, sluggish, and unwell, emotional toxins weigh on our well-being too. They clog up our minds and bring us down, affecting both mental and physical health. Eating clean, staying hydrated, and exercising are all crucial — and there are also mindful shifts we can make to clear the emotional waste that holds us back.

5 mindful shifts to embrace joy

Each shift toward gratitude, passion, kindness, a healthy tribe, and living in the moment brings us closer to pure joy. Embracing these practices lightens our emotional load, freeing us to relish life’s most precious moments.

From Gina — something I built

For the shift itself

The hardest part of a mindful shift is rarely knowing what to do. It is the seam between one thing and the next, when you are still carrying the last hour into the next one.

I built SOVA for those seams.

Long, wordless, unchanging sound. Put it on for the few minutes between finishing and starting, and let it mark the edge for you rather than trying to make the shift by willpower.

What the sound actually is, and how it is made, is set out plainly in What to Put On When You Have Got Ten Minutes.

The app carries short versions built for exactly this, when an hour is more than you have.

The practice beneath it all

When the mind needs somewhere to land

Everything in this wing points, in the end, to the same place — the breath, and the nervous system beneath it. It is why I built SOVA: a quiet companion for the moments in between.
