Buying Fish: Wild vs Farmed

The short answer

Choose wild-caught when you can, favor low-mercury fish high in omega-3s, and don't be shy about asking where your fish came from.

Wild over farmed

Wild-caught fish generally eats a natural diet and carries better fats and fewer additives than crowded farmed fish. If you remember one rule, that's the one.

Ask questions

It's completely fine to ask the fishmonger where a fish was caught, whether it's wild or farmed, and fresh or previously frozen. A good shop is happy to tell you.

Favor low-mercury, high-omega-3

Salmon, sardines and other low-mercury fish give you protein plus the omega-3 fats we don't make ourselves. For a friendly, up-to-date guide to which fish are cleanest, EWG's seafood guide is my go-to.

Frozen is fine

Good frozen fish is often frozen fresher than the ‘fresh’ counter — no shame in the freezer at all.

Gina's tip

Keep a couple of portions of wild salmon in the freezer. Dinner is never more than twenty minutes away, and it's one of the best things you can eat.
