Buying Eggs: Cage-Free, Free-Range & Pasture-Raised

Buying Eggs: Cage-Free, Free-Range & Pasture-Raised
The short answer

The labels rank roughly cage-free, then free-range, then pasture-raised as the gold standard for how the hens live. ‘Organic’ is about their feed. But don't agonize, any egg is one of the best proteins you can buy.

What the labels mean

Cage-free: out of cages, but often still indoors. Free-range: some access to the outdoors. Pasture-raised: real outdoor foraging, best for the hen, and often the best flavor and color. Organic: organic feed, no antibiotics.

Keep it simple

Buy the best you can comfortably afford and don't lose sleep over it. Even a basic egg is a nearly perfect, affordable protein, the label is a bonus, not a requirement.

Gina's tip

A deep-orange yolk usually means a happier, better-fed hen, and a richer-tasting egg. It's the one visual cue worth noticing.
