Enough

On having done plenty, in the month that suggests otherwise.

November asks a lot of women. Host it, cook it, remember everyone, be grateful while you are at it. This issue is a quiet argument for enough. Enough rest, enough food, enough effort. Not less than you are capable of, just less than the month will try to take. Gina

Enough, The Way Digest, Issue No. 03

Gratitude is lovely. It is not the same as being asked to be everything for everyone and smile about it.

“I feel guilty resting, especially this time of year. How do I get past that?”

You probably will not talk yourself out of the guilt, so stop waiting for it to leave first. Rest anyway, with the guilt sitting right there. It fades with evidence, not argument. And notice what you actually mean by rest, because most women mean a different kind of doing. Lying down and running the list is not rest. Twenty quiet minutes where nothing is required of you is. Take that this month, badly and imperfectly, and see whether anything you feared would collapse actually does.

Have a question you’d love me to answer? Write to me, I read every one, and the best land in a future issue.

One Last Thing

A small step toward your leap

November is the month of doing it all for everyone else and calling it gratitude. The hosting, the remembering, the being fine.

Somewhere in it there is a woman who has not asked herself what she wants in a long time, because the question felt indulgent next to everything else on the table.

It is not indulgent. It is the only question that ever changes anything. The Leap is where you finally set the rest of it down long enough to hear the answer.
