The Truth About Metabolism

The Truth About Metabolism
The short answer

If it feels like your metabolism betrayed you somewhere after 40, you’re not imagining it — but it didn’t break. It changed, mostly in ways you can influence. The “damaged metabolism” story is one of the least helpful ideas in wellness.

What actually slows down

A big part of the shift isn’t your metabolism failing — it’s losing muscle. Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so as it quietly declines with age and inactivity, you burn a little less at rest. The good news: that’s the part you can rebuild.

The hormone piece

Through perimenopause and beyond, shifting estrogen changes where you store fat and how you handle blood sugar. Real, yes — but not a life sentence, and not something crash-dieting fixes.

Why crash diets backfire

Under-eating for long stretches costs you muscle — the very thing keeping your metabolism humming. You lose the engine along with the fuel, which is why the weight so often returns.

What genuinely helps

Enough protein. Strength work to keep and build muscle. Sleep, which governs the hormones behind hunger and fat storage. And eating enough, consistently, rather than swinging between restriction and rebound.

Let go of “broken”

Your metabolism is doing its job under new conditions. Give it muscle, protein, and rest, and it responds — at any age.

Gina’s note

You didn’t ruin your metabolism, and you can’t “fix” it with a cleanse. Feed it, move it, sleep, and be patient. Health is built by consistent habits over time, never by chasing a perfect number.

When the mind needs somewhere to land

So much of this points back to one place — the breath, and the nervous system beneath it. It is why I built SOVA, a quiet companion for the moments in between.
