You are tired in a way sleep doesn’t fix. You lie down and the body won’t switch off. Somewhere along the way, rest became the thing you’ll get to — after everything else, which is to say, never.
This is the room where that changes.
How to actually rest when you can’t switch off
01Rest is not the reward. It is the ground.
We treat rest like something we earn at the end of a productive day. It isn’t. Rest is the ground everything else stands on — your patience, your clarity, your capacity to hold a hard thing. A depleted nervous system cannot do any of it. Rest is not what’s left over. It is the foundation.
02You can’t rest because the body doesn’t feel safe.
Here is why “just relax” never works: rest is not a decision, it is a physiological state — and the body only enters it when it believes the danger has passed. If your system is still scanning, still braced, still holding the day, it will not stand down no matter how tired you are.
You do not will yourself to rest. You signal safety, and rest follows.
03So signal safety to the body.
Speak the language the nervous system reads: warmth, a little weight, lower light, the long slow exhale. Legs up the wall for two minutes tells the body the chase is over. You are not being lazy. You are saying the oldest true thing there is — it is safe now, you can set it down.
04A nest, not a crash.
Rest is not collapsing at the end of a day that emptied you. That is a crash, and you wake up just as hollow. A nest is something you build and return to, in small pieces, through the day. Ten minutes of real quiet beats an evening of numb scrolling every time.
05And here is the secret.
The nest is not only where you land. It is where you leap from. You cannot cross a bridge exhausted. Every real change is launched from a rested, steady body — never a frantic one. Rest is not the opposite of a big life. It is the runway.
Try this, right now
The landing
- Lie down. Legs up a wall, or knees bent and feet flat.
- Three long exhales — each one longer than the breath in.
- Name the day’s heaviest weight, out loud or on paper — then say: “not now.”
- Stay two more minutes. Let the floor hold you.
You don’t have to fall asleep. You only have to let the body believe it’s safe to.
✦ Worth Noticinga quiet observation from Gina
I used to think rest was something I earned. Now I think it’s something that allows everything else to work better.
The quality of our work, our patience, our conversations, even our joy often depends on whether we’ve given ourselves permission to recover.
When you want to be walked into it, there’s a practice for landing back into yourself.
In SOVA it’s called ARRIVE — it slows the pace until what’s already here can finally reach you.
