The Leap · Step 3 of 6

Your Own Compass

who’s been holding the map, and taking it back

Your Own Compass

Sometimes what holds you back from the leap isn’t fear. It’s people.

Not always cruelly. Often it’s someone whose own stuckness makes your growing feel like a threat, when you rise, it reminds them they’ve stayed still. So, without either of you quite naming it, you shrink: to keep the peace, to not leave them behind, to stay the person they need you to be. And their fear, their scarcity, sometimes even their pain, becomes a weight you carry as if it were yours.

Sometimes you even become the place someone sets down what they can’t hold, the one who’s “too much,” the one who’s blamed, the reason. That was never yours to carry.

You can’t always scrub the situation clean. But you can wipe your boots at this door, and walk on.

This is where you pick up your own compass. You are allowed to be the navigator of your own life, to want your own things, make your own choices, point yourself in your own direction. Not their version of you. Yours.

A gentle reckoning

Who’s been holding the map?

Whose version of you have you been living?

Where do you make yourself small? (tap any)

Now, what’s actually yours to want?

That direction is your compass. No one else gets to hold it.

What Took Me Years to Understand

For years I listened to voices that knew very little about the life I was actually trying to build.

Some wanted me to stay the same because it made them comfortable. Others simply couldn’t imagine something different.

I’ve learned that every meaningful leap eventually asks the same question: whose voice am I following? Until I could answer “my own,” I stayed standing still.
