Get Grounded... From The Ground
Ever notice if you stop for a moment − and look around and listen − that a message often comes your way? Mother Nature is a force to be reckoned with, but she is nurturing and kind as well; and it's only when we slow down and listen to Her that we are able to grasp that wisdom.
Autumn. Beautiful colors, and falling, swirling leaves. As golds and reds and oranges drop to the ground like a quilt of color, our eyes follow them. The ground becomes a breathtaking showcase, as if Mother Nature is saying, "Look down! I have provided you with countless nutrients from the ground − they are waiting to nourish and prepare you for the months ahead." It really is that simple... those leaves light the way to nature's gift.
Think about sweet potatoes, yams, pumpkins (did you know that pumpkins are thought to be an anti-aging food?). These wonderful root fruits and vegetables come from the ground and provide a rich boutique of nutrients and flavor. And as an added perk, they actually help reduce sweet cravings. Changing our diets throughout the year helps us experience and benefit from, the special bounty each season provides. We tend to fill our summers with lots of salads and berries − what's better than eating from a summer garden?? But imagine a poor squirrel living on cucumbers through the fall and winter. Exactly. He wouldn't. He needs more... and so do you. This is not the Bulk Up Club by any means. But it's also not a big deal to gain a pound or two as the weather gets colder. Think about healthy nuts, like almonds. They are delicious, filled with protein, and they reduce bad cholesterol. As tree roots sink deeper and deeper into the ground, we are provided with offerings... Here are just a few more delectable and very healthy fall foods to remember:
- Apples
- Chestnuts
- Pomegranates
- Brussel sprouts
- Kale
- Ginger
As the owner of Flow Pilates Centre and GinaSantangelo.com, it is a privilege to work with many women as a Certified Health and Fitness Coach. When I coach someone who is feeling imbalanced, the first thing I look for is what types of food the body needs for that particular season. I love getting to know each client and learning about their unique cravings… it helps me to guide them on their own distinct paths. As you celebrate the days of fall, remember to listen to Mother Nature. Let her trail of leaves point you to nutritious, delicious foods that come from the ground... just waiting to fortify and ground you! Bon appétit.
